While we wait for the site to mature and verified user base to slowly grow, let’s hear some introductions here? What’s your training / competition career been like? Would be nice to get to know the serious early adopters here a bit! :)
This is also a good opportunity to connect with people here on the site, who might take a look at your profile and chose to verify it or not. Please note, that we kindly don't allow "please verify me" topics in the forum as there will be too many of them.

Hey everybody, my name is John Byrne.
I started Judo in 2010 as my Judo Sensei Mike Nevins started teaching Judo classes each Thursday at our Kenpo Karate school - he had just earned his Nidan in Judo from Sensei Herb Parsons (our lineage is from the Budokwai in England).
I had done Judo for probably 7 years without doing any belt testing - as I had told myself - I just want to get better and add it to my striking etc. Of course, as one can expect about a year or so into BJJ I decided I wanted to actually become more formal and belt test (surprise :D ) in Judo after I brought Mike into our BJJ school to teach and train with us.
I started helping him create his syllabus and curriculum - and he's grown me to help teach the beginners etc as part of my training. I really enjoy teaching, and I very much enjoy Judo - and as an older practitioner (46) I've seen not only the standing but the different style of newaza has helped me. I'm a huge fan of kesa Gatame and especially makura-kesa-gatame. Especially since BJJ teaches that this position is "weak and ineffective" which as judokas we know isn't the case ;)
I was told to get ready for Brown 2 a week before we found out in the US the pandemic started and shut everything down. I've been drilling with my son who is a BJJ blue belt trying to get ready again.
I am also on beltchecker.com - I've been doing BJJ for about 6 - and Kenpo for about 14. I Love martial arts and the community and brotherhood it can foster.

Hello, I started Judo back in the local YMCA over 30 years ago. I've trained off and on since then. I currently teach BJJ, but once the schools around here are cleared to open back up, we will be adding a separate Judo program. I'm a USJA nidan, and it's a pleasure to be here. Great community over at BJJ beltchecker site, so hopefully we can grow the Judo site as well.

HI, I started Judo in 1989 as a teenager. I initially graded through the junior Mon grades and then in 1993 did a senior grading to earn my 4th Kyu. I progressed to 1st Kyu in 1995. I competed quite regularly as a junior and then also as an adult and did ok.
Around the end of 1995 I received a substantial injury from an open weight kyu grade competition (I was 66kgs and a 1st Kyu at the time) where I had my sternum crushed which took around a year to recover from, that pretty much ended my competitive Judo career as by then I had moved into Aberdeen to start college and whilst I continued to train in Judo I had also started Taekwon-Do and Ju-Jitsu and concentrated on them more.
However Judo has always been my first love, my brother is an excellent competitor - he earned his 6th Dan competitively and has had a very successful Judo career (hopefully I will get him on here at some point) - he is my instructor and he called me one night about 5 years ago and essentially gave me a slap over the phone and challenged me to get my Judo back on track and finally earn my black belt, which I did earn in 2018.
Sadly covid has pretty much put a pause on Judo for now but I cannot wait to get back on the mat.

Hello all, started my Judo journey in 1982 when I attended a High School (in New York) that had a competitive team. Trained on and off for many years and came back to Judo seriously about 2007 as my Sons showed interest. I currently hold the rank of Yondan and compete in Kata. Under USA Judo I am also an International level certified coach and it's great to be a part of this community with so many fellow Judoka.

I’ve trained judo here and there since starting BJJ in 2007. Decided to attend class regularly at the start of 2020 to finally gain some rank and increased proficiency and then covid, injuries, and a job change put a stop to that in May. Hopefully this year goes better.

Yeah, I feel like COVID has negatively impacted a lot of people's (myself included) goals for last year, but hopefully things will start to turn around this year

Hello everyone! My name is Ryan, I am brand new to Judo. I started training Judo specifically last month (December 2021) 3 days a week. I'm also a black belt in BJJ, and continue to train BJJ every other day (beltchecker link on my profile). I've been interested in the sport of judo for awhile and I decided to finally commit the time and energy to it. Unlike most BJJ guys I am not doing Judo to "improve my takedowns for BJJ." I think that is an inherently flawed mindset as the strategies and rules of the sport of Judo often will not work at the higher levels of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For me I wish to learn Judo as it's own separate entity, and if I happen to pick up a couple tricks along the way that is great too. Unfortunately I'm going to be moving in two months for work and will need to find a new jiu-jitsu and judo gym, but i'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Produced in 1973, damaged along the way, still rolling though. Started judo on 1983 at 10y of age. Competed national and international level. Reached judo black belt in 1992 and 4th degree black belt in 2001 Combined training in judo, Goshin Ryu JJ (Brown belt), Wado Ryu karate (green belt), athletics, gymnastics, rock climbing and military close combat. Played around in some boxing (no real talent though) and sport sambo. Started BJJ/Grappling at Yamasaki Academy Belgium in 2006-2007 and absolutely fell in love with it. Stopped competing judo and BJJ in 2016 at the age of 43. Received my BJJ black belt in 2020 from Augusto Ferrari. Now running my own academy, passing the Judo and BJJ knowledge and promoting the art.

Hello everybody,
my name is Sebastian Ellinghaus and I noticed this platform after establishing myself at beltchecker.com.
My Judo-journey began in the early 80´s with a Judo addicted childhood and youth.
Including tons of competitions from local level up to international tournaments as a competitor and also a referee.
Roundabout 1995 this very active time ended cause of entering the army and therefore changing the locations very often.
During that period I never stopped training -wherever I was- including some nice competition experiences, like joining the national students championships as a competitor and teamcoach of the german university of the armed forces in 2002.
Later on and over the years following I was promoted up to a 5th degree Blackbelt. But that was honorary by time served and because of my merits by spreading (my non-IJF-conform understanding of) Judo. I earned a 4th and 5th degree, a 2nd and 3rd degree were never awarded to me. However, small and not well known organizations without „official“ and „approved“ examinations in Judo did so.
Over and beyond: meanwhile I am a BJJ Blackbelt , too (what, by the way, explains a little bit of how I understand Judo).
So feel free to visit my profile and vote for me or ask any questions.
Everyone who is doing so will be visited and maybe voted vice versa!

I am a danish judo coach, who started my judo journey back in 1987, 35 years ago. I have been around several clubs and teams in my time.
Currently I am president of the local dojo in Svendborg, Denmark and also a national coach in the Faroe Islands. My youtube channel is rowing, but not fast enough. But fx. with help from Matt D’aquino it's growing slowly.
Please vote for me so I can get on with my online adventures! Including this site.

I'm Mark. I've been training judo for 64 years. I began at 5 when my parents enrolled me in the Jerome Mackey school in New York, and had a love-hate affair with judo until I was 12. Then I started doing judo at summer camps. When I was 16, it became a serious hobby and my real love for the sport began. I trained in various college clubs and spent time at Shiro Oishi's in New York where I got to train with various luminaries including Eguchi sensei, Shiina sensei and Haitian Olympian Parnel Legros. I finally got my black belt in 1989 and embarked on a judo teaching career. I taught at both Cornell University and at the criminal justice school in Corning, New York. Eventually I moved to Florida and taught at various local clubs as an assistant, and in 2002 I moved to Texas where I currently teach both judo and BJJ. Unfortunately I haven't found any of my old students or colleagues on this site, so please check out my documented credentials.

Hi all,
With only 372 members so far some proper introductions probably can't hurt.
Well, that and the fact that I haven't been verified in the last two years :-)
So here I go. My name is Bert van Iersel and I live in the Netherlands. I started training judo at the age of 6. I stopped for a few years in which I trained jiu-jitsu, but I pickup judo again and eventually got my black belt. At a certain point I also wanted to teach so I did a youth leader curriculum. I liked it so much I immediately followed it up with the Judo Teacher A curriculum of the Dutch Judo Association (Judobond Nederland). For that diploma I also had to get my 2nd degree.
During my judo days I always wondered why judo stopped after a throw. And why an armbar was allowed but a leg log wasn't. Imagine my joy when I "discovered" BJJ. So 14 years ago I started putting more and more energy in BJJ training.
Meanwhile I got kids and they started training both Judo and BJJ too. So the last couple of years I started training both again too.
With kind regards,
Bert van Iersel

Hi Guys, I'm Luke from Broken Hill, NSW, Australia. I have no formal ranks in Judo, Recent Black Belt in BJJ looking to absorb as much Judo as I can most of my current knowledge is from Seminars, Matthew D’aquino's old Judo University and BJJ Fanatics instructionals and some of Shintaro Higashi's instructionals. Thought this would be a great place to meet some Judo people from all over.

Hello, my name is Sergio. I started training Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2004 and I have trained consistently in both arts since that time. I have moved around a lot in the intervening years (USA, Italy, Iceland and Denmark), and was slow to rise through the ranks of both arts as a result. I hold black belts in both Judo and BJJ (I was promoted to Shodan in Judo in 2019) as well as some others, and teach both arts to law enforcement officers in Vermont (USA). I am glad to be on this platform, and look forward to seeing it grow.
